MGL News
Congratulations to Jennifer Kyle on her successful defense of her Ph.D. thesis. Jennifer is moving on to a Postdoctoral position to pursue her groundbreaking research on the geomicrobiology of bacteriophage.
MGL members presented five papers in September 2009 at ISEB 19 in Hamburg Germany.
Chris Kennedy is working with Bactech Mining, who are developing their bioleaching technology to extract difficult to treat ore in an environmentally responsible and economically beneficial manner.

The
Microbial Geochemistry Laboratory (MGL) was established in 1991 as one of
the first dedicated geomicrobiology laboratories in Canada when
Professor (F.G.)
Grant Ferris joined the Department of Geology at the University of Toronto.
Research since then has extended from field studies on mineral precipitation
by bacteria in terrestrial hot springs and deep sea hydrothermal vents to
experimental laboratory work on the surface chemistry of bacterial cells.
Professor Ferris serves as the Chair of the Executive Board of the International Symposia on Environmental
Biogeochemistry, is a founding member of the Canadian Space Agency
Astrobiology working group and the InterRidge Biogeochemistry working group.
He has served as an associate editor for the Geomicrobiology Journal, Applied
Geochemistry, and Geobiology.
