MGL News
Congratulations to Kerry on her successful defense of her Ph.D. thesis. Kerry is moving on to a Postdoctoral position with Maria Dittrich at the University of Toronto Scarborough.
Welcome Evelyn, Sonu, and Lauren ... DSRA wonder students 2010!
This is the fourth year MGL is participating in the Deep River Science Academy (DRSA). Three high school students attending the DRSA will be working with M.Sc. student Veronika Shirokova and Professor Ferris on the biogeochemistry of shallow glacial fluvial aquifers in the upper Ottawa valley.

The
Microbial Geochemistry Laboratory (MGL) was established in 1991 as one of
the first dedicated geomicrobiology laboratories in Canada when
Professor (F.G.)
Grant Ferris joined the Department of Geology at the University of Toronto.
Research since then has extended from field studies on mineral precipitation
by bacteria in terrestrial hot springs and deep sea hydrothermal vents to
experimental laboratory work on the surface chemistry of bacterial cells.
Professor Ferris serves as the Chair of the Executive Board of the International Symposia on Environmental
Biogeochemistry, is a founding member of the Canadian Space Agency
Astrobiology working group and the InterRidge Biogeochemistry working group.
He has served as an associate editor for the Geomicrobiology Journal, Applied
Geochemistry, and Geobiology.
