Welcome
The
Microbial Geochemistry Laboratory (MGL) was established in 1991 as
one of the first dedicated geomicrobiology laboratories in Canada
when Professor (F.G.) Grant Ferris joined the Department of Geology
at the University of Toronto.
Research since then has extended from field studies on
mineral precipitation by bacteria in terrestrial hot springs and
acid mine drainage environments to experimental work on the
surface chemistry of bacterial cells.
Professor Ferris serves as the Chair of the Executive Board
of the International Symposia on Environmental Biogeochemistry, is a
founding member of the Canadian Space Agency Astrobiology working
group and the InterRidge Biogeochemistry working group.
He has served as an associate
editor for the Geomicrobiology Journal, Applied Geochemistry, and
Geobiology.

Members of the MGL will be participating in
the International Society for Environmental Biogeochemistry Short
course on Microbe-Mineral Interactions: Molecular to Global Scale
Processes, November 4 to 8, 2012.
