Dr. Chris Kennedy
Chris has been either studying or investigating microbe-mineral interactions for the past ten years. His Ph.D. thesis demonstrated how iron oxidizing bacteria at sites of hydrothermal venting can alter the physicochemical properties of iron oxide formation and their fate on the seafloor. Since Chris’ Ph.D. research, he has been a part of the ongoing investigations with the Swedish Nuclear Fuel Company (SKB) with Gothenburg University and also worked on unraveling the utility of iron isotopes as a biosignature at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Dr. Kennedy also spent two years in corporate finance working with junior mining exploration companies, which led to Chris’ current role with MGL as a lead consultant with BacTech Mining, who are developing their bioleaching technology to extract difficult to treat ore in an environmentally responsible and economically beneficial manner. In his current role with MGL, Chris is also investigating the capacity of bacteriogenic iron oxides to immobilize Iodine from ground water in the unlikely event that there is ever leakage from Atomic Energy Canada near Chalk River, Ontario.
